Haffkine Institute, Mumbai. All bacterial cultures , including the bacterial spores of deadly pathogens , as well as the fungal cultures which have the potential to cause “Hospital Acquired Infection” were found to be killed after 30 minutes of exposure in the system at 90°C

According to a WHO report, about 1.3 million children die in India each year from syringe reuse and that some 22 million people are infected. In India about five billion injections are given annually whereas only 1.5 billion syringes are manufacturedi (Upto 64% of illegal reuse of used syringes).

• In rural health care centers and sub urban centers the problem is even bigger where due to lack of unviable option of waste collection and disposal and due to lack of awareness on alternate treatment technologies, health care centers are either disposing their waste with regular solid waste, or burning it in make shift incinerators

• Increase in use of plastic disposables and growing use of plastic syringes (in the immunization program) has increase the amount of plastic waste. Waste burn in incinerators is giving rise to additional problem of rise in highly toxic gaseous emissions like Dioxins and Furans which can cause cancer and respiratory diseases.

7Does OptiMaser™ treat all categories of medical waste? If not, how will I manage to dispose of the other categories?

• OptiMaser™ Treats almost all categories of biomedical waste which can be misused or have the potential of illegal resale / reuse.

• Such waste has enormous potential to spread Hospital Acquired Infections. It can treat 4 critical categories of waste as mentioned under the Bio-medical Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 1998. This includes:

CAT-3: Microbiology & Biotechnology Waste? Wastes from laboratory cultures, stocks or specimens of microorganism live or attenuated vaccines, human and animal cell culture used in research and infectious agents from research and industrial laboratories, wastes from production of biological toxins, dishes and devices used for transfer of cultures.

CAT-4: Waste Sharps??
Needles, syringes, scalpels, blades, glass, etc. that may cause puncture and cuts. This includes both used and unused sharps.

Items contaminated with blood, and body, fluids including cotton, dressings, soiled plaster casts, lines beddings, other material contaminated with blood.

Wastes generated from disposable items other than the waste sharps such as tubings, catheters, intravenous sets etc.

It does not treat Human/animal body parts for which deep burial and incineration are the two options recommended Liquid waste and chemical waste can be disposed after proper treatment by methods as recommended in the Bio-medical Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 1998.

9Can OptiMaser™ treat infected, metals needles and AD syringes?

• For Sure, OptiMaser™ can definitely treat metals, infected needles and AD syringes when hydrated with high disinfection levels.

• Metals should be completely submerged in water for proper conductivity and better efficacy.

10Can it treat Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Coated infected medical waste Plastics?

Yes with high level of disinfection and with no side emissions unlike autoclaves.

11What is the method of disposal of waste treated by OptiMaser™?

Waste after treatment is completely disinfected and can be disposed off as household waste. However, such disposal is socially still not acceptable. Recycling of waste with / without shredding is a good source of income. Treated waste should be disposed off as per the land / country law and regulations.

12What sections of the hospital is the OptiMaser™ most suitable alternative?

It is suitable for the point of generation treatment of waste coming out of almost all sources of waste generation . however, MMDS is most suitable on the following 6 locations:

15 Should I as a customer be able to install and use an OptiMaser™.

Yes, It is extremely easy to install, use. There are no harmful emissions or discharge coming out of it. Thus there is no precaution (apart from those mentioned in User and Service Manuals) or additional investment required.

16What are the Onsite requirements to run the unit?

There is a huge market for OptiMaser™ since there are only 3 manufacturers worldwide. (two in Austria and one in India). Potential exists wherever there is an existing evil of medical plastic reuse unethically (3rd world, Africa, SAARC etc.)

No, since this is a GoI patented product and SAMEER & Govt. of India through DEITY signed a Transfer of Technology Agreement (ToT) with M/s S.S. Medical Systems (I) Pvt. Ltd. For the mass manufacture of the product. Such offence is punishable in India and internationally through WTO treaties.

33How do we check the efficacy of disinfection at site?

• A microbiological study on treated waste from a microwave unit can be done for various test organisms like Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphlococcus aureus, E Coli, Candida albicans, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Geo Bacillus Sterothermophilis to name a few.

• The bacterial spores are most resistant to heat and their inactivation indicates that the system is capable of inactivating virtually all types of micro organisms.

• Self contained Biological Indicator ampoules, with a spore population of 105, for bacillus subtilis or Geo Bacilus Stero thermophilis are readily available in the market.

• These SCBI ampoules for Geo Bacilus Stero thermophilis can be placed in the Maser Bin , amidst waste to be treated. Once treated, suspension from these ampoules are incubated at 370 C for 48-72 hours and observed for growth, if any.

• No growth after incubation, indicates that the organisms are inactivated and hence the required disinfection achieved successfully.
